Very sorry if those things are inconvenient to you.

The Haddon Library is an important collection of published material in the field of archaeology and anthropology. The library holds around 66,000 items – books, journal volumes, pamphlets – and it serves the staff, research students and undergraduates of the University, besides members of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society.
Term-time opening is Mon-Fri 08:45-17:15, Sat 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00. For most things you might need to know about the Haddon, you can explore the links shown above.
The online catalogue for libraries within Cambridge University and the colleges is called Newton. The part of Newton that contains the Haddon catalogue is called Departments & Faculties F-M.
Cambridge has plenty of other libraries you might find helpful – the college libraries, the faculty and departmental libraries, the central Cambridge University Library (always called the UL). A basic rule of thumb is this:
college libraries are for college members only
departmental and faculty libraries admit most Cambridge University members, but have a variety of regulations and opening hours
the UL admits all members of the University, but 1st and 2nd-year undergraduates may not borrow there.
All those libraries are listed in the Cambridge Libraries Directory
To use those libraries’ catalogues online, approach Newton via its front page.
An increasing number of electronic books are available to members of the University.
If these web pages don’t take you to what you’re looking for, ask a member of the Haddon team: Aidan Baker, Tom Hawthorn, or Alex Saunders. Ring 01223 333505 or email haddon-library at lists.cam.ac.uk

OPENING HOURS
During the vacation, the Haddon’s opening hours are Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00. We might have to close for lunch on some days; watch this space.
The library will be closed all day at weekends. It will also close on the afternoon of Friday 25 September, on account of the Alumni Weekend presentation.
POETRY COMPETITION
Here comes the list of winning poems!
1st prize: ‘His eightieth’ (Roger Elkin)
2nd prize: ‘The story of 800′ (Mary Courtney)
3rd prize: ‘Sleepover at the Museum’ (Caroline Gill)
Prizes will be presented by adjudicator Sue Butler at 14:45 on Friday 25 September, in the McDonald Institute, Downing Street, CAMBRIDGE CB2 3ER. The event will be part of the University’s Alumni Weekend .
The competition was the library’s contribution to the University’s 800th Anniversary celebrations, and supported by the University’s 2009 Fund. Entrants were asked to write around one or more of the numbers 800, 1209, and 2009, interpreted freely – so 1209 could mean £12.09, or 12 September, or the area code for parts of Cornwall.
Thanks also to the McDonald Institute for the use of their premises.
The winning poems, and others entered in the competition, will remain on display in the Haddon until after the prizegiving.
QUESTIONNAIRE
The Haddon Library is looking to move some lesser-used material offsite, following a generous offer of storage space from Biological Anthropology, and then make part of the library over into a learning area.
We want to know what our users would most want from such a learning area.
Could you please tell us at the site shown below?

SATURDAY 14 JUNE – MONDAY 6 OCTOBER
Our vacation opening hours are Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00. Thanks, Helen & Tom, for the Bank Holiday opening. We are closed all day at weekends.
On Friday 26 September, the library will close at 13:00, and remain closed all afternoon, for our Alumni Weekend presentation. This will be on the life and adventures of Wilhelm Blandowski — a troubled Prussian in 1850s Australia. The Haddon has a rare copy of Blandowski’s 1862 publication, Australien in 142 photographischen Abbildungen.
There may be other occasions where we shall have to close for lunch, or for longer periods, during the vacation. Information about them will be circulated by email and posted on our website.
During the vacation, undergraduates may borrow up to 6 Open Access books at a time, and up to 4 Restricted Access books at a time, provided that the total is not more than 8 books at a time. Vacation loans are due for return on Thursday 9 October. For loan entitlements, see our web page

Wireless access is now live in the Haddon, via the University’s own Lapwing facility.
You will need a Raven password to use Lapwing. See https://raven.cam.ac.uk/ and http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/stepbystep.html for more.
For information on how to find Lapwing, and what to do with it when you have found it, see http://lapwing.csx.cam.ac.uk/ .
All due thanks to Netx, to Tuong and Alan from the Computing Service, and to Jon and Ian here, for setting up. Jon’s next Haddon project is to get the new photocopiers charging and printing networkedly. Watch this space for further developments.
Our other current news, regrettably, is that a reader had her bag stolen in the main reading room on the afternoon of 15 April. Everyone keep an eye on personal belongings while they’re here, or use the lockers, or leave the belongings in a secure place away from the Haddon.
